Äkkigalleria 27 - Katustipendi

Äkkigalleria will be part of this year's Yläkaupungin yö festival with work by our annual Katustipendi (street-art grant) recipient.
Every year Äkkigalleria awards a small grant to a Finnish artist to create an uninhibited work of temporary public art in Jyväsklyä. The Katustipendi was organized to encourage artists to invest in public space and to engage art outside the gallery. The first Katustipendi was awarded in 2011. This year's Katustipendi work will be shown during the Yläkaupungin yö festival from May 17th, 2014 until a future date.
This year the Katustipendi recipient is Jussi Riihelä. Riihelä works in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography and street art. He specializes in experimental materials and strives to instigate discussion through his work be it the subject or the placement of his pieces.
For the Katustipendi, Jussi Riihelä will create a new work in the Jyväskyä's Seminaarimäki university area. More information about the specific location will be disclosed later in the week.
